One way to ensure reliable and affordable electricity is by offering solutions that encourage efficient use.
Energy efficiency helps keep electricity affordable for everyone and benefits the environment by reducing carbon emissions. Investments in energy efficiency are less costly than investments in generating stations, resulting in lower electric rates for our customers. As part of our Comprehensive Energy Plan, we piloted a number of innovative energy efficiency programs, including a free programmable thermostat, energy calculators and rebates for high-efficiency appliances. We’re proud to say we’re the first investor-owned utility in Kansas and Missouri to offer these types of programs.
Since 2005, we’ve saved nearly 200 megawatts through energy efficiency, enough to meet the demand of 38,000 homes. Our efforts have created more than 60 jobs within our region and generated $50 million of economic activity. Several programs encourage energy efficiency where it’s most needed within our service area—our KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations (GMO) area. To meet the need, we can build a power plant. Or, we can utilize energy efficiency, which costs much less. Missouri legislation rewards utilities for programs that successfully encourage energy efficiency, which means we can recover costs faster than usual. We hope to extend these programs throughout our service area in the future.
Our energy solutions include:
- Energy Efficiency Programs and Rebates: We offer a range of energy-efficiency programs for our Missouri customers, including rebates, energy audits and programmable thermostats. We’d like to offer these programs in Kansas, but the state doesn’t yet have a law allowing us to do so. You can help by communicating your desire for these programs to your Kansas legislators and the Kansas Corporation Commission.
- Demand Response: These programs reduce the burden on the electrical grid on peak days. Partnering with customers to strategically reduce electricity usage lets us continue offering lower energy costs for our customers because we're able to avoid the expense of buying costly market power or building a plant.
- Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: We promote energy-efficient transportation with 20 charging stations for electric vehicles throughout the Kansas City area. Plug-in vehicles help reduce fossil fuel emissions, increase energy efficiency and help reduce the nation’s reliance on foreign oil.
- LED Streetlights: Light emitting diode (LED) streetlights have the potential to provide enhanced performance and energy savings. We conducted a year-long pilot program to test 44 LED streetlights, evaluating appearance and performance to understand if LED streetlights are feasible for general use in the future.
