Hawthorn 5 Power Plant

". . .A recently permitted state-of-the-art coal-fired unit, for example, at a Kansas City Power & Light facility has 88 percent lower NOx, 99 percent lower particulate matter, and 92 percent lower SO2 emissions than would an uncontrolled facility." --2001 National Energy Policy Report

Hawthorn Unit 5

  • Uprated from 476 to 565 megawatts adding critically needed power to Midwest
  • Rebuilt for service in less than 22 months after contract was awarded -- industry norm is 36
  • Awarded Power magazine's 2001 Marmaduke Award
  • Designed for low-sulfur Powder River Basin coal

  • Constructed unit train coal dumper with laser positioning
    • Reduced coal transfer to six hours from 2 1/2 days
  • Used best-available control technology (BACT) to dramatically lower air emissions
    • Meets Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emission limit of 0.08 lb./Mbtu
    • Meets Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emission limit of 0.12 lb./Mbtu
    • Meets particulate emission limit of 0.018 lb./Mbtu
  • Increased the generating reserve margin in the area
  • Constructed a nesting box for peregrine falcons on the exhaust stack
