As the Kansas City area continues to grow, the need to supply our communities with clean, reliable and affordable energy is a major concern of us at Kansas City Power & Light.
In 2003, KCP&L began talking to customers and community leaders about developing a comprehensive, long-term energy plan for the greater Kansas City area. Our goal was to develop a proactive and sensible approach to meeting the energy, economic and environmental needs of our community throughout the next decade. We believe we have a plan that does this.
The plan is based on input and ideas from hundreds of people throughout our community, including residential and commercial customers, regulators, legislators, civic leaders, industry experts, and environmentalists. The consensus was that we need a long-term energy plan that delivers three key benefits:
- Generate enough additional electricity to meet the growing demand in the Kansas City area. Not only today, but for many years to come. Population and economic growth, coupled with the greater use of electricity in the home and workplace, will create a demand on current capacity. To avoid the risk of outages, or depend on others to sell us power at a premium, we need to act now.
- Stimulate the economy by creating new jobs and keeping the cost of electricity affordable. We need to keep utility bills as low as possible, despite skyrocketing costs within the energy industry for raw materials and transportation.
- Help improve our area's air quality. We all must do our part to help improve the air quality in our communities. A priority of our plan, KCP&L, working with local and federal groups and regulatory agencies, pledges to keep our region's air clean by reducing emissions at our power plants.
