Lanesfield School

Just outside Gardner, Kan., at the site of a Kansas City Power & Light substation, is historic Lanesfield School, built in 1869. It is the site of the pre-Civil War Battle of Bull Creek, was a mailstop on the Santa Fe trail, and is on the National Registry of historic places. It is also the only building that remains on the town site of Lanesfield.

KCP&L formed the Prairie Partnership to restore the lands surrounding Lanesfield School. The partnership includes Johnson County Museums, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

Lumber from recycled utility poles was used to build a picnic shelter and viewing platform at the site. Visitors can explore the area's history and restored prairie by taking the self-guided tour created by KCP&L and Shawnee Mission Northwest students.
