KCP&L Prairie Wetlands

Kansas City Power & Light's efforts in constructing a wetland and restoring native grasses and wildflowers at a former substation resulted in the company receiving the "Wildlife Habitat Award" from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.

Wetland construction began in 1995. The 55-acre site includes 23.6 acres of wetlands in three cells. Wetland development partners were the City of Gardner, Kansas Wildlife and Parks, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Johnson County Conservation District, Hillsdale Water Quality Project and Connley Ranch.  See map for directions.

Area students study the dynamics of wetlands at this site. The area is also used by Kansas Wildlife and Parks and the Natural Resource Conservation Service as a demonstration wetland, to document habitat development and study water quality.
