Reading Your Residential Meter

You can monitor your electric usage by reading your own meter. Your meter is located at the side or back of your home. The electric meter has five dial faces. The second and fourth dials are read counter-clockwise. When a dial hand is between numbers, always use the smaller number. For example, when between six and seven, use six. (NOTE: zero is read as ten). The correct reading in the example below is 66429.

To measure the kilowatthours used during a given period, take one reading at the beginning and another at the end of that period. Subtract the first reading from the last.
