Summer outage tips
- Close drapes and blinds on the sunny side of your home
- During the day, go to an air-conditioned building such as a library or shopping mall
- Wear lightweight, light-colored loose clothing. It reflects heat and sunlight
- Drink plenty of cool liquids even if you don't feel thirsty
- Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day
- Individuals at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors
- Eat light. Avoid hot, heavy meals and opt for foods high in water content such as fruits and salads
- Take baths and showers. Because water conducts heat away from the body, bathing in tepid water is a good cooling technique
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible
Here are some things you should consider
- Develop a list of emergency phone numbers to keep on hand during an outage.
Be sure to include KCP&L’s 1-888-LIGHTKC outage reporting number and
kcpl.com. Remember that cordless phones won’t work if the power goes off, so
be sure to have a corded phone or cell phone for back up.
- KCP&L’s automated reporting system uses your phone number to identify your
service address. Make sure the number in our database is current by making a
note on your bill stub or call (816) 471-5275 to update it.
- If you live alone, are homebound, have life-support equipment or live in a
secluded area, arrange for a nearby friend, relative or neighbor to check on you
during severe weather events.
- If you’re homebound and rely on medical- or life-support equipment that is not
supported by back-up power supplies, register with KCP&L as a Medical
Customer. Download a Medical Customer Application form to submit to KCP&L.
- Assemble a storm kit that contains this brochure, battery-powered radio or TV,
flashlights with fresh batteries, a wind-up or battery-operated clock, blankets,
candles and other essential items. Keep it centrally located.
Reminder: Call toll-free 1-888-LIGHTKC (1-888-544-4852) to report outages, flickering lights, lines down or other damage-related problems.
